[One Month Later . . . ]

A swirling mist traces the contour of the unsettled waves that lead to the islands monolithic black structure, visible only by moonlight. Soon the whirl of helicopter blades slice the air as they fly into view, carrying a tall, un-shaven police captain named Dralon. As the helicopter lands near a squadron of armored cars positioned outside the front of the structure, Dralon announces on his loudspeaker:

Captain Dralon: This is Captain Dralon of the California State Police, representing the law enforcement units assembled here. To all prisoners, surrender now and return to your cells . . . otherwise we'll open fire.

At this range, fires are visible from behind the barred windows of the prison. Spotlights strafe the night sky and if not for Dralons loudspeaker, the mangled screams resonating from within would drown his voice with ease. Aware of the threat posed by the metahuman prisoners of Blackstone, Dralon called on SWAT teams from both the Police and Sheriffs departments in several counties. With over fifty cars, two helicopters and all units combined, the total law presence of law enforcement exceeds one-hundred and fifty armed officers. Yet, Dralon knows even that may not be enough.

As the officers ready their weapons, hoping to embody the attitude Dralon exudes, an average sized man in an orange jumpsuit, known as Pulse, steps out from among the prisoners spilling from the main gate. He smiles at the officers with an evil grin.

Pulse: Let me try to respond to that in my most elegant fashion . . .

A transparent wave of force spews from his hands and as it collides with a group of officers and their vehicles, all are thrust backward into the waters below. And with his lead, the other criminals attack as well. The police respond with automatic weapons, shotguns, and even bazookas . . . everything they have.

Despite this effort, the police prove completely ineffective against their opponents, for the line of prisoners slowly, yet surely advances. Dralon knows that without more sufficient backup, the prisoners will soon overwhelm them. He removes a portable phone to make a call. But in the mere seconds it takes him, the situation turns fatal, as his officers are forced into direct physical confrontations once the metahumans breach their gunfire thanks to the giantess She-Devil. Knocking officers through the air with the ease of a tennis ball, she turns to her cohort, a man by all appearance of normal height, yet Dagger stands only half her own.

She-Devil: Why did you stop me from killing that guard earlier?

Dagger: 'Cause you aint no killer darlin. And believe me, you dont wanna change that, not fer some asshole security guard.

She-Devil: I know, I can hardly even believe I considered it, but then he was gonna

Before she can finish, a towering mass of muscle they easily identify as the metahuman Brutus charges past them, wielding a double-bladed battle ax.

Brutus: Brutus kill police!

But before he can graze even a hair, a sleek, darkly dressed figure leaps from the cockpit of a fighter jet aptly coined the HoverHawk. As the jet disappears over the horizon, the image of the hawk emblazoned on the figures chest seems to swoop down on Brutus as the hero known as KnighHawk extends both fists and completes his skydive by knocking Brutus backward, while he gracefully flips overhead, landing on his feet. KnightHawks cape gathers around him in an oval pattern and he mutters to the officers with their mouths agape:

KnightHawk: Move back.

Before Brutus can rise, KnightHawk lifts him by the collar and hurtles him into a group of other prisoners. He then turns to find himself surrounded by a legion more. Two metahumans ready their energy blasts, but as they fire, KnightHawk leaps aside, and they only succeed in leveling themselves. But this only puts him in range of a speedstress armed with katanas and moving at a hundred miles per hour. He avoids any lethal cuts and prepares a counter attack, but before he can execute it, a large prisoner hits him from behind. Then a burst of energy from the side knocks him off his feet.

Although he tries to fight back, the prisoners quickly overwhelm him. His arms and legs restrained, dozens of fists rain down upon him. One after the other, they leave their mark, letting blood from every orifice on his face. And just as his ends seems near, through a foggy gaze, KnightHawk sees a criminal tossed away . . . and then another . . . and another. Though too exhausted to identify his benefactor, a hand soon helps him stand. With each blink of his eyes, the image forms, while the screams and the sirens fade away.

Entity: Hey man, hope you hadnt given up, cause the cavalry just arrived!

His senses returned, KnightHawk stumbles back at the sight of the Entity floating inches from his nose, legs wrapped in the Lotus posture. He glances over his shoulder when his body grazes Brutus clenched fist, only Brutus, like all the others, doesnt react to KnightHawk. Every flicker in Blackgate, every blade of the helicopters, and every officer and prisoner moves not an inch.

KnightHawk: Free the officers and well manage the things from here.

Entity: You dont say?

KnightHawk: I appreciate your help, but I have a job to do.

Entity: I have a much better use for you.

KnightHawk: Not tonight, Entity.

KnightHawk walks past the Entity, removes some handcuffs from a pouch and begins to restrain the frozen prisoners. Without turning around, the Entitys back morphs into his front so he is again looking at KnightHawk.

Entity: What I have in mind will make far better use of your talents than apprehending common thugs.

KnightHawk: I wont leave these officers to perish while I entertain your sick game.

The prisoner KnightHawk is handcuffing turns into the Entity and the cuffs themselves disappear so KnightHawk is instead holding his hands. A big grin crosses the Entitys face.

Entity: I wish it were only that. But now its so much more than just a game.

Pulling his own hands free, KnightHawk brushes past the Entity once more.

KnightHawk: I dont have time for this.

Entity: Au contraire! As you can see, Ive reserved all the time in the world. Now I can either take you by force or I can make you regret your resistance and then take you by force. The only reason why Im giving you these options is I know youre much brighter than the others. Which will it be, KnighHawk?

Grasping his chin between his index finger and thumb, KnightHawk considers the circumstances before replying:

KnightHawk: How many more like me have you taken?

The Entity spins three hundred and sixty degrees as if in a swivel chair, laughing in glee at KnightHawks response.

Entity: Youre so bright! Care to guess?

KnightHawk: Considering all the metahumans available to you here, and yet youve chosen me, Id wager youre selective.

Entity: Oh, how right you are.

KnightHawk: As to the number, the solution is variable in its correlation to both your omnipresence and unpredictable nature.

Entity: Go on . . .

KnightHawk: However, Im really interested in how many more you plan to take and their relation to your intent. In the past, youve focused your attention on specific subjects, yet you imply a broader study as evidenced by your interest in me. But more, your tone betrays a hint of anxiety, something Id have never associated with you before. For that matter, I elect for you to take me under the condition Im able to witness your ensuing abductions.

Entity: Smart decision, and Ill grant your condition. Besides, only one more . . .

The Entity snaps his fingers and all light disappears, including the moon.

Entity: . . . abduction to go.
